This innovative program harnesses the power of storytelling, superhero role models, hands-on activities, and creative expression to instill lifelong values of conservation, community, and environmental responsibility.

Through immersive and empowering experiences, students learn about endangered species, the importance of recycling and reuse, aquifer and river protection, and how every action they take matters. With the help of our unique freshwater superheroes — like Mermaid Aqua Fauna, Aquifer Man, and Mermaid Maya Monarch — we are creating meaningful connections between children and their environment while building pride in their city and stewardship for the San Marcos River.

At the heart of the Mermaid Society of Texas is a bold mission: to protect and preserve the sacred San Marcos River through education, action, and community connection. Our Core Initiatives

Siren Duty
Launching each year on Memorial Day Weekend and running through August, Siren Duty is an engaging, boots-on-the-ground initiative powered by our AquaReina Team and dedicated volunteers. Positioned at river entry points, our Sirens warmly welcome visitors to the Mermaid Capital of Texas while offering friendly education about our “Reuse at the River” ordinance. Volunteers encourage the use of refillable containers helping reduce single-use waste in and around the San Marcos River during the busiest season of the year.

River Guardianship Symposium
This annual community gathering unites local environmental leaders, educators, volunteers, and river allies to share success stories, highlight pressing challenges, and collaborate on solutions. The symposium also serves as a launchpad for volunteer recruitment, shared clean-up calendars, and creative outreach campaigns to inspire stewardship citywide.

Earth Stewardship Community Fair
Held each spring, this vibrant and interactive fair invites families, local businesses, and organizations to celebrate Earth Day through eco-education, sustainable lifestyle exhibits, hands-on activities, and performances. It's a joyful expression of what it means to live in harmony with our environment — rooted in the spirit of San Marcos.

Cool Sammy Salamander
